Nominated
I am very pleased to announce that the 'Home Port Project' based on
CITIES by John Hartman has been nominated for the 2008 OAAG Educators
Award. The project was conceived of by David Huff (Education Director
of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery) who asked if i might present the concept
to several Grey, Bruce & Saugeen area 'port' school classes. After
several in-class sessions, the students works were later organized
into a show aboard the Chi Cheemaun (where it was seen by more than
42, 000 visitors), mounted in the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, and also
shown at Bruce Power.
Thank you to all the the teachers, and facilitators who helped to
make this project such a success!
My Learning & Teaching Method
We don't all think the same. We don't all learn the same way. We don't
all express ourselves the same way.
A good teacher takes the time to recognize individuality and encourage
it, rather than forcing another to adhere to only one standard. This
is my standard. All of my students; children, their parents, teens
& adults alike, are encouraged to hold me responsible for ensuring
this methodology. You should feel completely confidant that you understand
the principles or concepts you've been introduced to, before you leave
the class or private session. Always speak up, and voice any questions,
or concerns, youmay have as they arise. When you do that, we are both
students AND teachers.
Path It Along
Good instruction/teaching makes all the difference!
I would like to extend a grateful nod to the teachings of conscientious
mentors of past and present; thank you all.
Valuable instruction informs and teaches both the student AND the
teacher. An instructor must learn to teach without ego. We all have
a story about feeling caged in a room, bored to death, while some
horribly monotonous teacher droned on about ... well, something. Something
that could no doubt have been interesting, but just not coming from
this person. It is with this in mind that each time I'm offered the
opportunity to teach, or develop a new program, that I try to make
it as much of an experiential program as possible. In other words,
create an environment in which artistic process engages the participant(s)
to explore the work themselves. This allows me to remain very 'hands-off',
allowing the individual to master 'their' project. It is more fun
to learn by doing!
So far, I have taught or developed experiential art courses for adults
and children at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, CMHA, Kelowna Sports
& Recreation. And with Grey, Bruce, and Saugeen area grade &
middle schools. I am also currently working on programs with Sheatre
and the United Way in Owen Sound, and have several future-works in
both Ontario and BC. |

Everyone can paint & draw!
Cost $45/h (2 hrs min. class) | Ages 8
- 80+ | Fit to your schedule
Sauble Beach/Owen Sound area June 25th
- August 8th, 2008 | Kelowna September 10 - to April 2009
There is a set of basic principles for how
to paint and draw. We all need to know, practice, and remind ourselves
what these concepts are in order to master these skills. For
those who've never picked up a pencil or brush before, I can teach
you how to draw & paint in 5 days.
Everyone, even the most practiced and skilled artist has to remind
themselves of these basic concepts. Our initial session will teach
both of us how you work best. Then we'll work through lessons that
adapt to your way of learning using simple, everyday objects found
indoor & outdoors. Most importantly, at the end of the lessons,
you will have learned how to positively critique your own work so
that you can quite literally teach your self. |
